2005 Solo II Divisional Series Results Champions and points tallies for the 2005 edition of the Kumho Tires Motorsports NorPac Solo II Divisional Series are official and have been announced by Solo II Divisional Steward Katie Elder. The series added a fourth event, allowing Big Sky region to hold its first-ever Divisional event in the series, requiring three events to qualify for points. Participation took a beating, however, with only 12 drivers qualifying for points (2 others did three events but were not in the same class). And only 57 drivers -- 20 fewer drivers than in 2004 -- did even two out of three 2005 events. The 2005 Champions are all repeat winners from some class or other. Debbie Kerswell, Reno Region, came back from fourth place at Atwater with 1st and 2nd places at Reno at Packwood, to claim the series championship. The tightest two classes were GS and CSP. All three GS drivers did all four events. Abe Douglas pulled out the win by a single point over Jake Nygard, with wins at Atwater and Big Sky and a third at Reno to Nygard’s win at Reno and seconds at Big Sky and Packwood and third at Atwater. CSP would have been similarly tight under the old smaller series format and three drivers would have been within two points. Chris Kannan wins the series Championship under either format, however, and is the only driver in the class to score points in the necessary three events. NorPac’s nine 2005 Kumho Tires Motorsports Champions include:
With the significant decrease in participation, Divisional Steward Elder decided to go ahead and award trophies to those that would have qualified under the old points scheme for three events. “Those drivers will not be recognized as Champions because we had published in the series announcement that three events were required in order to win points, and at least one championship would be changed if we reversed that now. But given the apparent mass decision to only do two events, we will recognize in some fashion the efforts to another 50 people to compete in at least two events in the series.” The drivers who also attended all four events and would not otherwise win an award will also receive a trophy, as is the Divisional Series’ practice whenever budget-possible. Elder said that some drivers cited this summer’s higher gasoline prices as factors in attending fewer events. NorPac always has the problem of being geographically far-flung and is blessed with strong regions that present great regional competition opportunities. A four-event series needs three events to count in order to break ties and to support the smaller regions who do not hold National Tour events. Elder believes we may need to reconsider whether the Divisional can really support a four-event series at this time.
